About Dehradun ZOO : Dehradun Zoo, earlier known as Malsi Deer Park is situated at Dehradun Mussoorie Highway, about 15 km from Ghantaghar, the center place of Dehradun city. This park was formed from part of Malsi compartment no 1 and 2, reserve forest of Malsi Range of Dehradun forest division, lies in the southern side. The entire forest is dominated by coppice crop of Sal along with other species like Haldu, Rohini, Jhingan etc and undergrowth is scanty.

This park was established as Van Chetna Kendra in the year 1976 with few numbers of Spotted Deer. The Malsi Deer Park was up graded to Mini Zoo by Central Zoo Authority under Section 38(H) of Wild Life Protection Act, 1972 by order no 19-123/93-CZA(267) (M) 450 dated 09.03.2012. The master layout Plan of the zoo was approved by CZA on dated 11.06.2013, F.No. 19-123/93-CZA(267)(Vol. I)(M)/ 3322, 14.08.2013. Revised master layout plan was approved by CZA 11.2.2016, 19-123/93-CZA(267)(Vol. I.(AK)/247/2016

The total area of this park is 25 Ha (62.5 Acre), out of which at present only 5 Ha (12.5 Acre) area is open for the visitors. After the completion of the expansion plan, all 25 Ha area will be open for the visitors. This park at present housed about 187 animals. Besides, this park is also acting as one of the important rescue centers for injured and conflicted animals.

The Dehradun zoo shall act as a Scientific institution engaged in the conservation of wildlife and the welfare of wild animals.

This zoo shall be developed as a Centre of knowledge/ excellence on wildlife management and ex-situ conservation of animals.

It shall act as a Centre for education, awareness, and recreation on the theme of nature, forest, wildlife, and sustainable lifestyle.

This zoo shall facilitate the visitors to understand the biology and behavior of the species displayed and their importance in natural balance and appraise the composite and complex nature of different ecosystems.

Compliment the national efforts in conservation of wildlife through conservation breeding of endangered wild animal species of the region in a planned and coordinated manner on a scientific basis.

Develop empathy amongst visitors for wild animals and motivate them to support the cause of conservation of wildlife Develop an understanding amongst the visitors about the ecological linkages with the life-supporting processes of nature and the need for sustainable lifestyles and living in harmony with nature.

Dehradun Zoo is being conceptualized to achieve the following objectives :

To establish and sustain a population of physically, genetically and behaviourally healthy animals and displaying them in naturalistic ambiance.

To supplement the conservation strategies for the rare and endangered species of the Shiwalik landscape by ex-situ conservation efforts.

To emerge as a center for educating, motivating and spreading the message of wildlife and biodiversity conservation to the public.

To act as a rescue and transit center for the problem and injured animals rescued from the nearby areas.

Location and Accessibility

Dehradun Zoo is located on Mussoorie Road, approximately 10 kilometers from the main city of Dehradun. Its strategic location makes it a perfect stopover for people heading to the famous hill station, Mussoorie. The park is easily accessible by road and offers ample parking space for visitors.
